Exposé is the 14th episode of the third season of the American drama television series Lost. The episode was written by Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz and directed by Stephen Williams. It originally aired on the ABC network in the United States on March 28, 2007. "Exposé" is notable for its focus on the characters Nikki Fernandez and Paulo, two survivors of the plane crash that had not been previously highlighted in the series. Their backstory and ultimate fate are revealed in this episode, which has generated mixed reactions from fans and critics.

Plot[edit | edit source]

The episode interweaves the present events on the island with flashbacks showing Nikki and Paulo's life before the crash and their actions on the island that were unseen in previous episodes. It begins with Nikki running through the jungle and collapsing in front of Hurley and Sawyer, uttering the word "paralyzed" before apparently dying. Through flashbacks, it is revealed that Nikki and Paulo were con artists who had poisoned a wealthy television producer to steal diamonds, which they then brought with them on Oceanic Flight 815.

On the island, their relationship deteriorates as they search for the diamonds, leading to mistrust and betrayal. Paulo finds the diamonds but hides them from Nikki. In the present timeline, the survivors attempt to solve the mystery of Nikki's apparent death. It is eventually discovered that they were both bitten by a spider whose venom induces a paralysis that mimics death. Believing them to be dead, the survivors bury Nikki and Paulo alive.

Reception[edit | edit source]

"Exposé" received polarized reviews from critics and fans. Some praised the episode for its unique storytelling technique, integrating Nikki and Paulo into the main narrative and providing closure to their story. Others criticized it for devoting an entire episode to two minor characters, viewing it as a diversion from the main plotlines. Despite the mixed reception, "Exposé" is often remembered as one of the most controversial and talked-about episodes in the series.

Themes and Analysis[edit | edit source]

The episode explores themes of greed, betrayal, and redemption. Nikki and Paulo's quest for the diamonds serves as a metaphor for the corrupting influence of wealth and power. Their tragic end is a cautionary tale about the consequences of deceit and mistrust. "Exposé" also examines the idea of second chances, as the characters are given the opportunity to redefine themselves on the island but ultimately fail to escape their past actions.

Production[edit | edit source]

"Exposé" was a challenging episode to produce, as it required integrating Nikki and Paulo into events from the series' past seasons. This was achieved through careful planning and the use of previously filmed scenes, into which the characters were digitally inserted. The episode also featured guest appearances by previously departed characters, adding to its complexity.

Legacy[edit | edit source]

Despite its divisive reception, "Exposé" has been the subject of much analysis and discussion among the Lost fan community. It is often cited as an example of the series' willingness to take risks and experiment with its narrative structure. The episode has also been referenced in discussions about the treatment of minor characters in ensemble television series.
