Extensible Metadata Platform (XMP) is a standard for processing and storing standardized and custom metadata in digital documents. It was created by Adobe Inc. and is now maintained by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) as ISO 16684-1.

Overview[edit | edit source]

XMP provides a standard format for the creation, processing, and interchange of standardized and custom metadata for digital documents and data sets. It is used to embed metadata into files, making it easier to manage, search, and retrieve information about the files.

History[edit | edit source]

XMP was first introduced by Adobe in 2001 as part of the Adobe Acrobat 5.0 software. It has since been integrated into many Adobe products, including Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, and Adobe InDesign. In 2012, XMP was standardized by ISO as ISO 16684-1.

Features[edit | edit source]

XMP allows for the embedding of metadata in a wide variety of file formats, including JPEG, TIFF, PDF, MP3, and MP4. The metadata can include information such as the creator of the file, the date it was created, and keywords describing the content of the file.

Metadata Schemas[edit | edit source]

XMP supports a variety of metadata schemas, including:

Custom Metadata[edit | edit source]

In addition to standardized metadata schemas, XMP allows for the creation of custom metadata schemas. This flexibility makes it possible to tailor the metadata to the specific needs of different industries and applications.

Applications[edit | edit source]

XMP is widely used in the fields of digital photography, publishing, and multimedia. It is used to manage and organize large collections of digital assets, making it easier to search for and retrieve specific files.
