Extensor digitorum muscle of feet
Extensor Digitorum Longus
The Extensor Digitorum Longus is a muscle in the human body located in the anterior compartment of the leg. It extends the toes and dorsiflexes the foot.
Origin and Insertion[edit | edit source]
The Extensor Digitorum Longus originates from the lateral condyle of the tibia, upper 3/4 of the medial surface of the fibula, interosseous membrane, and deep surface of the fascia. It inserts into the dorsal surface of the base of the distal phalanges of the lateral four digits.
Function[edit | edit source]
The primary function of the Extensor Digitorum Longus is to extend the four lesser toes. It also aids in the dorsiflexion of the foot at the ankle.
Clinical Significance[edit | edit source]
Damage to the Extensor Digitorum Longus can result in foot drop, a condition where the individual has difficulty lifting the front part of the foot.
