FFP standards refer to a set of European standards for respiratory protective devices, specifically filtering facepiece (FFP) masks. These standards are crucial in ensuring the safety and effectiveness of masks used in various environments, particularly in healthcare and industrial settings.

FFP standards are established by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) and are part of the EN 149 standard. The FFP classification system is used to denote the level of protection provided by a mask against particulates, including dust, mist, and fumes.
Classification[edit | edit source]
FFP masks are classified into three categories based on their filtering efficiency and leakage:
- FFP1:
* Provides the lowest level of protection. * Filters at least 80% of airborne particles. * Total inward leakage must not exceed 22%. * Suitable for environments where the risk of exposure to harmful particles is low.
- FFP2:
* Offers a medium level of protection. * Filters at least 94% of airborne particles. * Total inward leakage must not exceed 8%. * Commonly used in healthcare settings and industries where exposure to harmful particles is moderate.
- FFP3:
* Provides the highest level of protection. * Filters at least 99% of airborne particles. * Total inward leakage must not exceed 2%. * Used in environments with high risk of exposure to hazardous particles, such as in chemical plants or during pandemics.

FFP masks are widely used in various sectors:
- Healthcare:
* Protects healthcare workers from airborne pathogens, including viruses and bacteria. * Essential during outbreaks of infectious diseases, such as the COVID-19 pandemic.
- Construction and Industry:
* Protects workers from dust, smoke, and other particulates generated during construction, mining, and manufacturing processes.
- Public Safety:
* Used by emergency responders and in situations where air quality is compromised.

FFP masks must comply with the EN 149 standard, which specifies the requirements for the design, performance, testing, and marking of filtering half masks. Compliance ensures that the masks provide adequate protection and are safe for use.

Masks are subjected to rigorous testing to ensure they meet the FFP standards. Tests include:
- Filter Penetration Test:
* Assesses the mask's ability to filter out particles.
- Breathing Resistance Test:
