Fascia of Scarpa[edit | edit source]

Fascia of Scarpa (highlighted in red)

The Fascia of Scarpa is a deep membranous layer of the superficial fascia found in the lower part of the abdomen, the perineum, and the upper part of the thigh. It is named after the Italian anatomist Antonio Scarpa.

Anatomy[edit | edit source]

The Fascia of Scarpa extends from the umbilicus to the femoral triangle, and from the inguinal ligament laterally to the pubic symphysis medially. It is continuous with the Colles fascia in the perineum and the dartos fascia in the scrotum and penis.

Clinical significance[edit | edit source]

The Fascia of Scarpa is clinically significant as it acts as a barrier to the spread of fluid collections and infections. It also plays a role in the formation of abdominal hernias and hydrocele.
