Fay Webb-Gardner
Fay Webb-Gardner (1885–1969) was an American political figure and socialite, known for her significant contributions to public service and her role as the First Lady of North Carolina. She was married to O. Max Gardner, the 57th Governor of North Carolina.
Early Life[edit | edit source]
Fay Lamar Webb was born in 1885 in Shelby, North Carolina. She was the daughter of James Landrum Webb and Kansas Love Andrews Webb. Fay Webb was raised in a prominent family and received her education at local schools before attending Converse College in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
Marriage and Family[edit | edit source]
In 1907, Fay Webb married O. Max Gardner, a lawyer and politician. The couple had four children: James Webb Gardner, Margaret Love Gardner, Fay Lamar Gardner, and O. Max Gardner Jr. The family resided in Shelby, where they were active in the community and the Democratic Party.
First Lady of North Carolina[edit | edit source]
Fay Webb-Gardner served as the First Lady of North Carolina from 1929 to 1933 during her husband's tenure as governor. In this role, she was known for her advocacy for social welfare programs and her support for the arts. She played a key role in promoting the establishment of the North Carolina Symphony and was involved in various charitable organizations.
Public Service and Legacy[edit | edit source]
After her husband's term as governor, Fay Webb-Gardner continued to be active in public service. She was a member of several boards and committees, including the North Carolina Historical Commission and the North Carolina Art Society. Her contributions to the state's cultural and social landscape were widely recognized.
