Fedora is a Linux distribution developed by the Fedora Project which is sponsored primarily by Red Hat, a subsidiary of IBM. Fedora serves as the upstream source of the commercial Red Hat Enterprise Linux distribution. Since its initial release in 2003, Fedora has been known for being a cutting-edge distribution that focuses on innovation, incorporating new technologies and features before they appear in other distributions.

Overview[edit | edit source]

Fedora aims to provide a free and open source collection of software and operating system to be used by individuals and organizations alike. Its development is community-driven, with contributions coming from thousands of developers and users worldwide. Fedora's mission is to lead the advancement of free and open source software and content as a collaborative community.

Features[edit | edit source]

One of the key features of Fedora is its commitment to innovation. It includes the latest software and technologies, often making these available to users before other distributions. This includes new versions of the GNOME desktop environment, the Linux kernel, and various programming languages and tools.

Fedora is also known for its strong emphasis on security. It was one of the first major distributions to adopt SELinux (Security-Enhanced Linux), a set of kernel modifications and tools designed to enforce security policies. Additionally, Fedora uses a strict package management system that ensures software integrity and authenticity by verifying digital signatures and checksums.

Editions[edit | edit source]

Fedora offers several editions tailored to specific use cases:

  • Fedora Workstation - Aimed at personal and professional users. It features a user-friendly desktop experience, primarily using GNOME.
  • Fedora Server - Designed for servers, it includes the latest data center technologies.
  • Fedora IoT - Targets the Internet of Things applications and deployments.

Community and Contributions[edit | edit source]

The Fedora Project encourages participation from anyone. The community is structured around various Special Interest Groups (SIGs) and teams, including documentation, design, marketing, and quality assurance. The project's governance is open and transparent, with a board of community-elected representatives guiding the strategic direction.

Release Cycle[edit | edit source]

Fedora has a roughly six-month release cycle, with new versions introducing the latest software and features. Each release is supported with updates until one month after the release of two subsequent versions, ensuring that users have a stable and secure operating system.

Installation[edit | edit source]

Fedora can be installed on a wide variety of hardware, including laptops, desktops, servers, and ARM devices. The installation process is straightforward, with the Fedora Media Writer tool simplifying the creation of bootable USB drives. Fedora's installer, Anaconda, allows users to customize their installation, including disk partitioning, package selection, and system settings.

Fedora and Open Source[edit | edit source]

The Fedora Project is deeply committed to the principles of free and open source software. All software included in Fedora is under licenses approved by the Free Software Foundation and the Open Source Initiative. This commitment extends to the project's governance and community engagement practices, which are also open and transparent.
