Felipe Contepomi (born August 20, 1977) is an Argentine rugby union coach and former player. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest players in the history of Argentine rugby. Contepomi played primarily as a Fly-half or Centre and had a distinguished career with both club and country.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
Felipe Contepomi was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He attended Colegio Cardenal Newman, a school known for its strong rugby tradition. Contepomi later pursued higher education at University College Dublin, where he studied medicine, balancing his academic pursuits with his rugby career.
Club Career[edit | edit source]
Contepomi began his professional rugby career with Leinster in 2003. During his time with Leinster, he became one of the top point scorers in the club's history, amassing 1,225 points over 116 appearances. His exceptional playmaking skills and leadership on the field were instrumental in Leinster's success during his tenure.
International Career[edit | edit source]
Contepomi made his debut for the Argentina national team in 1998. Over his international career, he earned 87 caps and scored 651 points. Contepomi was a key player for Argentina in multiple Rugby World Cup tournaments, including the 2007 World Cup where Argentina finished third, their best performance to date.
Coaching Career[edit | edit source]
After retiring from playing, Contepomi transitioned into coaching. In 2021, he was appointed as an assistant coach for the Argentina national team, bringing his extensive experience and knowledge to the next generation of Argentine rugby players.
Personal Life[edit | edit source]
In addition to his rugby career, Contepomi is a qualified medical doctor. He has a twin brother, Manuel Contepomi, who also played rugby for Argentina.
