Fifty-three is a natural number that follows fifty-two and precedes fifty-four. It is a prime number, meaning it is greater than one and has no positive divisors other than one and itself. Fifty-three is the 16th prime number in the sequence of prime numbers. It is also an Eisenstein prime without an imaginary part and a real part of the form 3n-1. In addition to its mathematical properties, the number fifty-three has various appearances in science, technology, and culture.

Fifty-three is an odd number. As a prime number, it has significant importance in number theory. It is the fifth Sophie Germain prime, a prime number that is one less than twice another prime number. The prime following fifty-three is fifty-nine, making the pair a set of cousin primes. Furthermore, fifty-three is a safe prime, being one more than twice a prime number (in this case, 26).

In the realm of mathematics, fifty-three is also a Happy number. A happy number is defined by a process where the sum of the square of its digits is calculated; if this process eventually leads to the number 1, the original number is considered happy.
