Coffee culture refers to a social atmosphere or series of associated social behaviors that depends heavily upon coffee, particularly as a social lubricant. The term also refers to the diffusion and adoption of coffee as a widely consumed stimulant by a culture. In the late 20th century, particularly in the Western world and urbanized centers around the globe, espresso has been an increasingly dominant form.

The origins of coffee can be traced back to Ethiopia in the 9th century. However, the coffee culture as it is known today began to take shape in the 14th century in Yemen. From there, it spread to Egypt, the Ottoman Empire, and then to Europe. The first coffeehouse in England was opened in Oxford in 1650. These establishments became known as "penny universities" because for the price of a cup of coffee, one could sit for hours and engage in stimulating conversation with an educated segment of the population.

Coffeehouses[edit | edit source]

Coffeehouses or cafés are not merely venues for coffee consumption but have been centers of social interaction, intellectual discussion, and community life since their inception. The coffeehouse tradition has evolved differently across cultures. In the Middle East, for example, coffeehouses have historically been places for men to gather and discuss public affairs, play games, or listen to music. In Europe, they served as venues for the exchange of ideas, contributing to the Enlightenment. Today, coffeehouses continue to serve as meeting places for social interaction in many parts of the world.

Coffee in the Workplace[edit | edit source]

Coffee culture has also permeated the workplace. The "coffee break" has become an institutionalized ritual in many work environments, providing workers with a brief respite and an opportunity to socialize with colleagues. This practice not only fosters a sense of community but also can enhance productivity.

Specialty Coffee Movement[edit | edit source]

The late 20th century saw the rise of the specialty coffee movement, characterized by a greater emphasis on the quality and origin of coffee beans, as well as the craft of brewing. Specialty coffee shops often focus on direct trade coffee, sustainability, and providing a unique experience for the consumer. This movement has contributed to a more discerning coffee culture, with consumers becoming more knowledgeable about different types of coffee, brewing methods, and the cultural significance of coffee production.

Coffee culture has a significant global impact, influencing social practices, economic relationships, and even political affairs. The coffee industry is a major part of the global economy, with coffee being one of the most traded commodities in the world. Coffee cultivation and trade have shaped the histories and economies of many countries, particularly those in the so-called "coffee belt" around the equator.
