Financial Times

Financial Times (FT) is a British international daily newspaper printed in broadsheet and published digitally that focuses on business and economic current affairs. It is headquartered in London, England, and is owned by Japanese company Nikkei, Inc..

History

The Financial Times was launched as the London Financial Guide on 10 January 1888, renaming itself the Financial Times on 13 February the same year. Describing itself as the friend of "The City," the paper was a four-page journal. The readership was the financial community of the City of London, its only rival being the slightly older and more daring The Economist.

Ownership

The FT was owned by the Pearson publishing company for nearly 60 years until 2015, when it was sold to the Japanese media group, Nikkei Inc. The sale was part of Pearson's strategy to focus on its educational division. Nikkei Inc. promised to respect the journalistic independence of the FT and has since invested in several expansions of the newspaper.

Content and Influence

The Financial Times is globally recognized for its authority, integrity, and accuracy. It provides essential news, comment, data, and analysis for the global business community. It is divided into two sections: the first section covers domestic and international news, editorial commentary on politics and economics from FT journalists such as Martin Wolf, Gillian Tett, and Ed Luce, and opinion pieces from globally recognised leaders, policymakers, academics, and commentators. The second section consists of financial data and news about companies and markets.

Digital Era

In the digital era, the Financial Times has led the way among traditional newspapers in utilizing the internet to expand its reach. It was one of the first newspapers to launch an online edition in 1995. The FT has also been aggressive in its mobile strategy, launching apps for both iOS and Android devices.
