Finnish

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellnesspedia

Finnish refers to anything related to Finland, including its people, language, and culture. It is most commonly used to refer to the Finnish language, a Uralic language spoken by the majority of the population in Finland and by ethnic Finns outside Finland.

Finnish People[edit | edit source]

The Finnish people or Finns are a Finnic ethnic group native to Finland. Finns are traditionally divided into smaller regional groups that span several countries adjacent to Finland, both those who are native to these countries as well as those who have resettled. Also, some of these may be classified as separate ethnic groups, rather than subgroups of Finns. These include the Kvens and Forest Finns in Norway, the Tornedalians in Sweden, and the Ingrian Finns in Russia.

Finnish Language[edit | edit source]

The Finnish language (suomi) is a Uralic language of the Finnic branch spoken by the majority of the population in Finland and by ethnic Finns outside Finland. Finnish, along with Swedish, is an official language of Finland; Finnish is also an official minority language in Sweden.

Finnish Culture[edit | edit source]

Finnish culture is a combination of indigenous heritage, represented for example by the country's Uralic national language Finnish and the sauna, with common Nordic and European cultural aspects. Because of its history and geographic location, Finland has been influenced by the adjacent areas, various Finno-Ugric and Baltic peoples as well as the former dominant powers of Sweden and Russia.
