Firearm

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Firearm is a portable weapon that fires projectiles powered by rapidly expanding high-pressure gas produced by chemical reactions within a confined space. These weapons are also known as guns. They come in a wide range of sizes, ranging from handheld pistols to mounted artillery.

History[edit | edit source]

The history of firearms began with the invention of gunpowder, a substance that was first used by the Chinese in warfare. The earliest depiction of a firearm is a sculpture from a cave in Sichuan, dating back to the 12th century. The firearm was later introduced to the Middle East, Europe, and other parts of Asia.

Types of Firearms[edit | edit source]

Firearms can be classified into two broad types: long guns and handguns.

  • Long guns are designed to be fired from the shoulder and have a barrel with a helical pattern of grooves ("rifling") cut into the bore wall. Examples include rifles and shotguns.
  • Handguns are designed to be held and fired by one hand. Examples include revolvers and pistols.

Firearm Safety[edit | edit source]

Firearm safety is a set of rules designed to prevent accidental or negligent discharge, or the consequences of firearm malfunctions. The safety rules vary depending on the specific type of firearm, but the fundamental rules are always the same.

Firearm Laws[edit | edit source]

Firearm laws regulate the manufacture, sale, transfer, possession, modification and use of firearms by civilians. These laws vary greatly around the world.
