(Redirected from Firefighters)
Firefighter
A firefighter is a trained professional who is involved in the task of extinguishing fires. Firefighters also help in rescuing people from dangerous situations, primarily from fire. Firefighting is a highly technical profession which requires training and knowledge of fire dynamics.
Duties and functions[edit | edit source]
Firefighters are responsible for responding to fires and other emergencies including medical emergencies. They are responsible for connecting hoses to hydrants, operating the pumps that power the hoses, climbing ladders, and using other tools to break through debris. Firefighters also enter burning buildings to extinguish fires and rescue individuals. Many firefighters are responsible for providing medical attention. Two out of three calls to firefighters are for medical emergencies, not fires.
Training[edit | edit source]
In order to become a firefighter, one must undergo rigorous training. Many firefighters are trained in specialized disciplines such as hazardous materials (HAZMAT), vehicle rescue, wildfire suppression, and search and rescue. Many firefighters also receive training to provide emergency medical services.
Health risks[edit | edit source]
Firefighting has some inherent risks. Many firefighters are injured and killed each year while on duty. Many health issues are associated with firefighting, which can include heart disease, cancer, respiratory problems, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and more.
