First Families of Virginia

The First Families of Virginia (FFV) were the families in Colonial Virginia who were socially prominent and wealthy, but not necessarily the earliest settlers. They descended from English colonists who primarily settled at Jamestown in the early 17th century. These families often traced their lineage back to the English gentry and were influential in the political, economic, and social life of the Colony of Virginia.

History[edit | edit source]

The concept of the First Families of Virginia originated in the 19th century, but the families themselves were established much earlier. Many of these families were part of the Virginia Company, which was responsible for the establishment of the Jamestown Colony in 1607. Over time, they acquired large tracts of land and became the leading planters in the colony.

Notable Families[edit | edit source]

Some of the most notable First Families of Virginia include:

These families intermarried frequently, creating a tightly-knit social network that dominated Virginia's political and economic life.

Influence[edit | edit source]

The First Families of Virginia played a significant role in the development of the colony and later the state of Virginia. They were instrumental in the establishment of the House of Burgesses, the first legislative assembly in the American colonies. Many members of these families were also involved in the American Revolution and the founding of the United States.

Legacy[edit | edit source]

The legacy of the First Families of Virginia is still evident today. Many of their descendants continue to be prominent in Virginia society. The Society of the Cincinnati and the Order of the First Families of Virginia are organizations that celebrate the heritage of these early settlers.
