The Flag of Australia

The Flag of Australia is a national symbol of the Commonwealth of Australia. It features three prominent components: the Union Jack, the Commonwealth Star, and the Southern Cross constellation.

Design[edit | edit source]

The flag's design consists of a blue field with the Union Jack in the upper hoist quarter, a large white seven-pointed star known as the Commonwealth Star in the lower hoist quarter, and five white stars representing the Southern Cross constellation in the fly half.

Union Jack[edit | edit source]

The Union Jack in the flag's canton acknowledges the history of British settlement in Australia. It symbolizes Australia's historical ties to the United Kingdom.

Commonwealth Star[edit | edit source]

The Commonwealth Star, also known as the Federation Star, has seven points. Six points represent the six original states of the Commonwealth of Australia, and the seventh point represents the territories and any future states of Australia.

Southern Cross[edit | edit source]

The Southern Cross constellation is depicted with five stars: one small five-pointed star and four larger seven-pointed stars. This constellation is a significant navigational feature in the southern hemisphere and is a prominent symbol in Australian culture and identity.

History[edit | edit source]

The current design of the Flag of Australia was chosen in 1901 from entries in a public competition following the federation of the Commonwealth of Australia. The design was officially approved by King Edward VII in 1903. The flag has undergone minor changes since its inception, primarily to the specifications of the stars.

Usage[edit | edit source]

The Flag of Australia is used for official purposes by the Government of Australia and is flown on public buildings, schools, and private residences. It is also used during national holidays such as Australia Day and Anzac Day.

Protocol[edit | edit source]

There are specific protocols for the use and display of the Flag of Australia. It should be treated with respect and dignity, and there are guidelines on how it should be flown, including the times and occasions for half-masting.
