Ireland

The flag of Ireland (Irish: bratach na hÉireann ) is a vertical tricolour of green, white, and orange. The proportions of the flag are 1:2. The flag was first introduced by Thomas Francis Meagher in 1848 and was later adopted by the Irish Republic during the Irish War of Independence. It was officially adopted by the Irish Free State in 1922 and has been the national flag of Ireland since then.

Design and symbolism[edit | edit source]

The flag consists of three equal vertical bands of green (hoist side), white, and orange. The green represents the Gaelic tradition of Ireland, the orange represents the followers of William of Orange in Ireland, and the white represents peace, or a truce, between them.

History[edit | edit source]

The tricolour was first flown publicly by Thomas Francis Meagher during the Young Irelander Rebellion of 1848. It was intended to symbolize the inclusion and hoped-for union between Roman Catholics and Protestants. The flag gained popularity during the Easter Rising of 1916 and was later adopted by the Irish Republic during the Irish War of Independence.

Irish Free State and Republic of Ireland[edit | edit source]

The flag was adopted by the Irish Free State in 1922 and has been the national flag of Ireland since then. It was enshrined in the Constitution of Ireland in 1937.

Protocol[edit | edit source]

The flag should be displayed with the green at the hoist and the orange at the fly. It should never be defaced by placing any object or emblem on it. The flag should be treated with respect and should not be allowed to touch the ground.

Related flags[edit | edit source]

The flag of Ireland is similar to the Flag of Côte d'Ivoire, which has the same colours but in reverse order and a different proportion. It is also similar to the Flag of Italy, which has green, white, and red vertical stripes.
