Flag of Kiribati
The flag of Kiribati consists of a red field with a yellow frigatebird flying over a yellow rising sun and three horizontal wavy white stripes. The flag was officially adopted on July 12, 1979, when Kiribati gained independence from the United Kingdom.
Design[edit | edit source]
The flag's design is highly symbolic. The red field represents the ocean and the sky. The yellow frigatebird symbolizes power, freedom, and cultural dance. The rising sun signifies a new era and the equatorial position of Kiribati. The three horizontal wavy white stripes represent the three island groups: the Gilbert Islands, the Phoenix Islands, and the Line Islands.
History[edit | edit source]
Before independence, Kiribati was part of the British Empire and used the Union Jack and the British Blue Ensign with the emblem of the Gilbert and Ellice Islands Colony. Upon gaining independence on July 12, 1979, the current flag was adopted to reflect the nation's identity and heritage.
