The flag of Kosovo was adopted on 17 February 2008, the day that Kosovo declared its independence from Serbia. The flag is a symbol of the Republic of Kosovo and represents its sovereignty and independence.

Design[edit | edit source]

The flag features a blue field with a map of Kosovo in gold, surmounted by six white stars in an arc. The blue color is similar to that used in the flag of the European Union, symbolizing Kosovo's aspiration to join the European Union. The six stars represent the six major ethnic groups of Kosovo: Albanians, Serbs, Turks, Gorani, Roma, and Bosniaks.

History[edit | edit source]

Before the adoption of the current flag, Kosovo used the flag of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia and later the flag of Serbia. During the Kosovo War and the subsequent period of UN administration, the flag of the United Nations was often used in official capacities.

Symbolism[edit | edit source]

The flag's design was chosen through an international competition organized by the United Nations and the Provisional Institutions of Self-Government. The gold map of Kosovo symbolizes the territory of the country, while the six stars represent the ethnic diversity of the population.
