Flag of Northern Cyprus
Flag of Northern Cyprus
The Flag of Northern Cyprus is the official flag of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), a self-declared state that is recognized only by Turkey. The flag was adopted on 15 November 1983, following the unilateral declaration of independence by Northern Cyprus.
Design[edit | edit source]
The flag features a red star and crescent, which are traditional symbols of Turkish culture and Islam. These symbols are slightly offset to the left of the center. The flag also includes two horizontal red stripes, one at the top and one at the bottom, on a white background. The proportions of the flag are 2:3.
Symbolism[edit | edit source]
The red star and crescent are symbols commonly associated with Turkey and represent the cultural and historical ties between Northern Cyprus and Turkey. The white background symbolizes peace, while the red stripes represent the blood shed for independence.
History[edit | edit source]
The flag of Northern Cyprus was designed to reflect the close relationship between Northern Cyprus and Turkey. Prior to the adoption of this flag, the region used the Flag of Turkey. The adoption of a distinct flag was part of the broader efforts to establish a separate identity for Northern Cyprus following its declaration of independence.
Legal Status[edit | edit source]
The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus is recognized only by Turkey. The international community, including the United Nations, considers Northern Cyprus to be part of the Republic of Cyprus. As a result, the flag of Northern Cyprus is not widely recognized internationally.
