Solomon Islands

The flag of the Solomon Islands was officially adopted on 18 November 1977, shortly before the country gained independence from the United Kingdom on 7 July 1978. The flag consists of a blue field with a thin yellow diagonal stripe running from the lower hoist-side corner to the upper fly-side corner. In the upper hoist-side triangle, there are five white stars arranged in an X pattern.

Design and symbolism[edit | edit source]

The design of the flag is rich in symbolism. The blue field represents the surrounding Pacific Ocean and the importance of water to the islands. The yellow diagonal stripe symbolizes the sun, which is a vital element for the agricultural activities of the nation. The green field in the lower fly-side triangle represents the lush vegetation and the fertile lands of the Solomon Islands.

The five white stars in the upper hoist-side triangle represent the five main island groups that make up the Solomon Islands: Choiseul, Guadalcanal, Malaita, New Georgia, and Santa Isabel.

History[edit | edit source]

Before the adoption of the current flag, the Solomon Islands were a British protectorate and used the Union Jack as their official flag. The move towards a unique national flag was part of the broader process of gaining independence and establishing a distinct national identity.
