Flag of Transnistria
Flag of Transnistria
The flag of Transnistria is the official flag of the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic (commonly known as Transnistria), a breakaway state located within the internationally recognized borders of Moldova. The flag was adopted on 25 July 2000 and is a horizontal tricolor of red, green, and red with the hammer and sickle and a gold-bordered red star in the canton.
Design[edit | edit source]
The flag's design is heavily influenced by the flag of the former Moldavian Soviet Socialist Republic. The top and bottom stripes are red, symbolizing the socialist heritage and the blood shed for freedom, while the middle stripe is green, representing the agricultural richness of the region. The canton features the hammer and sickle and a gold-bordered red star, which are traditional symbols of communism and socialism.
History[edit | edit source]
The flag of Transnistria has its roots in the Soviet era. When Transnistria declared independence from Moldova in 1990, it initially used the flag of the Moldavian SSR. In 2000, the current design was officially adopted, retaining the Soviet symbols to emphasize the region's historical and political ties to the Soviet Union.
Symbolism[edit | edit source]
The red color in the flag represents the revolutionary struggle and the sacrifices made by the people of Transnistria. The green stripe symbolizes the region's agricultural wealth and natural beauty. The hammer and sickle, along with the red star, signify the region's commitment to socialist ideals and its historical connection to the Soviet Union.
Usage[edit | edit source]
The flag is used by the government of Transnistria and is displayed on public buildings, official documents, and during state ceremonies. It is also a symbol of regional identity and pride among the people of Transnistria.
