The Flexor Digiti Minimi Brevis Muscle of the foot is a small muscle located on the lateral side of the foot. It is one of the intrinsic muscles of the foot, meaning it is entirely contained within the foot and plays a crucial role in its function and movement.

Anatomy

The Flexor Digiti Minimi Brevis originates from the base of the fifth metatarsal and the sheath of the Peroneus Longus tendon. It inserts into the lateral side of the base of the proximal phalanx of the fifth digit (the little toe). The muscle is innervated by the Lateral Plantar Nerve, a branch of the Tibial Nerve.

Function

The primary function of the Flexor Digiti Minimi Brevis is to flex the little toe at the metatarsophalangeal joint, aiding in balance and gait. It also helps to maintain the transverse arch of the foot.

Clinical Significance

Damage or injury to the Flexor Digiti Minimi Brevis can result in a loss of balance and difficulty in walking. Conditions such as Plantar Fasciitis and Flat Foot can also affect the function of this muscle.
