Floral Park, Queens

Floral Park, Queens is a neighborhood located in the borough of Queens in New York City. It is part of Queens Community Board 13. The neighborhood is named for the village of Floral Park located to its east in Nassau County, from which it is separated by Little Neck Parkway.

History

Floral Park, Queens was originally part of the village of Floral Park until the 1898 consolidation of New York City, when the city's borders were extended to include western Nassau County. The neighborhood was developed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and its streets are named for flowers and trees.

Geography

Floral Park is located in the northeastern part of Queens, bordered to the north by North Shore Towers, to the east by the village of Floral Park, to the south by Bellerose and Queens Village, and to the west by Glen Oaks.

Demographics

As of the 2010 Census, Floral Park had a population of approximately 16,000. The neighborhood is ethnically diverse, with a large South Asian population, as well as significant numbers of Irish, Italian, and Polish residents.

Education

Floral Park is served by the New York City Department of Education. Public schools in the area include P.S. 115 Glen Oaks and P.S. 133 Queens. There are also several private and parochial schools in the neighborhood.

Transportation

Floral Park is served by the Long Island Rail Road's Hempstead Branch, with service at the Floral Park station. The neighborhood is also served by several New York City Bus routes.

Notable people

Several notable people have lived in Floral Park, Queens, including Major League Baseball player Whitey Ford and Congresswoman Grace Meng.
