From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Florbetaben (also known as Neuraceq or BAY94-9172) is a radiopharmaceutical compound used in positron emission tomography (PET) imaging. It is a derivative of the Amyloid protein and is used to detect Beta-amyloid plaques in the brains of patients suspected of having Alzheimer's disease.

History[edit | edit source]

Florbetaben was developed by the German company Bayer Schering Pharma. The compound was first introduced in 2005 and received approval from the European Medicines Agency (EMA) in 2014. It is now marketed under the brand name Neuraceq.

Mechanism of Action[edit | edit source]

Florbetaben works by binding to beta-amyloid plaques in the brain, which are a hallmark of Alzheimer's disease. The compound is labeled with the radioactive isotope Fluorine-18, which allows it to be detected by PET imaging.

Clinical Use[edit | edit source]

Florbetaben is used in PET imaging to detect the presence of beta-amyloid plaques in the brains of patients suspected of having Alzheimer's disease. It is not a cure for the disease, but it can help in the diagnosis and monitoring of the condition.

Side Effects[edit | edit source]

Common side effects of Florbetaben include headache, nausea, and injection site reactions. In rare cases, it can cause serious allergic reactions.
