Frankfurt am Main, commonly referred to as Frankfurt, is the largest city in the German state of Hesse and the fifth-largest city in Germany. Frankfurt is a global hub for commerce, culture, education, tourism, and transportation, and is the site of many global and European corporate headquarters. Frankfurt Airport is among the world's busiest. The city is also known for its futuristic skyline and the busiest German airport.

Frankfurt was a city of the Holy Roman Empire, the site of numerous Imperial Diets, including the one in 1848, which attempted to establish a unified German state. This rich history contributes to its status as a major world financial center. The Frankfurt Stock Exchange is one of the world's largest stock exchanges by market capitalization and accounts for more than 90% of the turnover in the German market.

Located on the river Main, Frankfurt is the financial capital of Continental Europe and the transportation centre of Germany. Frankfurt is home to the European Central Bank, the Deutsche Bundesbank, the Frankfurt Stock Exchange, and several large commercial banks.

The Frankfurt Stock Exchange is crucial to global finance. It hosts over 90% of the turnover in the German market and a significant share of the European market. Frankfurt is also the seat of the European Central Bank, which sets monetary policy for the Eurozone.

Frankfurt has many museums, theatres, and a world-class opera. The Museumsufer ensemble includes Städel Museum, which houses a collection of works from the 14th century to the present day. Frankfurt is one of the most diverse cities in Europe, with residents from over 180 different nations. The city has a significant expatriate community and is an important destination for immigrants in Germany.

The city is governed by a mayor and a city council. The current mayor of Frankfurt is Peter Feldmann, affiliated with the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD).
