Franklin is an independent city in the Commonwealth of Virginia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 8,180. The city is located in the southeastern part of the state, near the Blackwater River.

Franklin was founded in 1876 and has a rich history tied to the lumber industry. The city's location along the Blackwater River made it a prime spot for the transportation of timber. The arrival of the railroad in the late 19th century further boosted the local economy.

Franklin is situated in southeastern Virginia, approximately 40 miles west of Norfolk. The city covers a total area of 8.3 square miles, of which 8.2 square miles is land and 0.1 square miles is water.
