Frederic Bertley is a Canadian immunologist and science educator known for his work in promoting science literacy and education. He is currently the President and CEO of COSI (Center of Science and Industry) in Columbus, Ohio.

Early life and education[edit | edit source]

Frederic Bertley was born in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. He developed an early interest in science, which led him to pursue higher education in the field. Bertley attended McGill University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Physiology and Mathematics. He continued his studies at McGill, obtaining a Ph.D. in Immunology.

After completing his doctoral studies, Bertley engaged in postdoctoral research at the Harvard Medical School and the Children's Hospital Boston. His research focused on the development of vaccines for infectious diseases, including HIV/AIDS. Bertley's work contributed to the understanding of immune responses and vaccine development.

Bertley transitioned from research to science education and outreach, driven by a passion for making science accessible to the public. He joined the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia, where he served as the Senior Vice President for Science and Education. In 2017, Bertley became the President and CEO of COSI, a leading science center in the United States. Under his leadership, COSI has expanded its reach and impact, launching initiatives such as the "COSI Connects" digital platform, which provides online science education resources.
