Frederick Norton Manning
Frederick Norton Manning (1839–1903) was a pioneering Australian psychiatrist. He was the first superintendent of the Hospital for the Insane in Gladesville, Sydney, where he served from 1868 to 1898. Manning is known for his progressive approach to mental health treatment, advocating for the humane treatment of patients and the importance of occupational therapy.

Frederick Norton Manning was born in 1839 in Sydney, Australia. He studied medicine at the University of Sydney, where he developed an interest in psychiatry.

After completing his medical studies, Manning worked in various hospitals in Sydney before being appointed as the first superintendent of the Hospital for the Insane in Gladesville in 1868. He held this position for 30 years, during which time he implemented a number of progressive reforms in the treatment of mental health patients.
Manning believed in the therapeutic value of work and encouraged patients to engage in occupational therapy. He also advocated for the humane treatment of patients, arguing against the use of physical restraints and seclusion.
