Freewheelers EVS
Freewheelers EVS is a volunteer emergency service that provides out-of-hours transportation of blood, pathology samples, patient notes, and other medical supplies to hospitals in the South West region of England. The service is operated by a team of dedicated volunteers who use motorcycles to deliver these essential items quickly and efficiently.
History[edit | edit source]
Freewheelers EVS was established in 1990 by a group of motorcyclists who recognized the need for a rapid and reliable transport service for medical supplies outside of normal working hours. The organization has grown significantly since its inception, expanding its fleet and volunteer base to meet the increasing demand for its services.
Operations[edit | edit source]
Freewheelers EVS operates primarily in the counties of Somerset, Bristol, Bath and North East Somerset, South Gloucestershire, and Wiltshire. The service is available 365 days a year, from 7 pm to 7 am on weekdays and 24 hours on weekends and public holidays.
The organization relies on a fleet of specially equipped motorcycles, including models such as the Yamaha FJR1300 and the Honda ST1300, which are chosen for their reliability and performance. These motorcycles are fitted with emergency lights and high-visibility markings to ensure safety during operations.
Volunteers[edit | edit source]
Freewheelers EVS is staffed entirely by volunteers, including riders, controllers, and fundraisers. Riders are responsible for the safe and timely delivery of medical supplies, while controllers coordinate the logistics of each delivery. Fundraisers work to secure the necessary financial support to maintain and expand the service.
Volunteers undergo rigorous training to ensure they are prepared for the challenges of the role. This includes advanced motorcycle riding courses, first aid training, and familiarization with the specific requirements of transporting medical supplies.
Funding[edit | edit source]
As a charity, Freewheelers EVS relies entirely on donations and sponsorships to fund its operations. The organization does not charge for its services, instead relying on the generosity of the public and local businesses to cover the costs of fuel, maintenance, and equipment.
Impact[edit | edit source]
The impact of Freewheelers EVS on the local healthcare system is significant. By providing a rapid and reliable transport service, the organization helps to ensure that hospitals have access to the critical supplies they need, particularly during emergencies. This service can be life-saving, as timely delivery of blood and other medical supplies can be crucial in emergency situations.
