Friedrich August von Ammon
Friedrich August von Ammon (20 April 1799 – 8 May 1861) was a German ophthalmologist who was a native of Bayreuth. He was a pioneer in the field of ophthalmology and made significant contributions to the understanding and treatment of eye diseases.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
Friedrich August von Ammon was born on 20 April 1799 in Bayreuth, Germany. He studied medicine at the University of Erlangen and the University of Würzburg, where he received his medical degree.
Career[edit | edit source]
After completing his studies, von Ammon worked as a physician in Dresden. He specialized in ophthalmology, the branch of medicine that deals with the diagnosis and treatment of eye disorders. He was appointed as the director of the Royal Surgical-Medical Academy in Dresden in 1831.
Von Ammon is best known for his work on the anatomy and physiology of the eye. He conducted extensive research on the cornea and the lens, and his findings have greatly contributed to the field of ophthalmology.
Contributions to Ophthalmology[edit | edit source]
Von Ammon made several significant contributions to the field of ophthalmology. He was the first to describe the condition known as keratoconus, a degenerative disorder of the eye that results in the thinning of the cornea. He also conducted research on cataracts and developed a new method for their surgical removal.
In addition to his research, von Ammon was also a prolific writer. He authored several books on ophthalmology, including "Die Anatomie des Auges" (The Anatomy of the Eye) and "Die Physiologie des menschlichen Auges" (The Physiology of the Human Eye).

Friedrich August von Ammon died on 8 May 1861. His contributions to the field of ophthalmology have had a lasting impact, and he is remembered as one of the pioneers of the field.
