Friedrich Entress
German Nazi physician
Friedrich Entress (8 December 1914 – 28 May 1947) was a German Nazi physician and SS officer who was involved in human experimentation and war crimes during World War II. He served at several concentration camps, including Auschwitz and Gross-Rosen.
Early life and education[edit | edit source]
Friedrich Entress was born on 8 December 1914 in Pilsen, which was then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. He pursued medical studies and graduated with a degree in medicine. Entress joined the Nazi Party and the Schutzstaffel (SS), where he rose to the rank of SS-Hauptsturmführer.
Career in concentration camps[edit | edit source]
Entress began his career in the concentration camp system at Dachau concentration camp, where he was involved in medical experiments on prisoners. He later transferred to Auschwitz concentration camp, where he became the chief camp physician. In this role, Entress conducted numerous inhumane experiments, including testing the effects of various drugs and poisons on inmates.
Entress was known for his work with phenol injections, a method he used to execute prisoners. He was responsible for the deaths of thousands of inmates through these lethal injections. His actions were part of the broader Nazi human experimentation program, which aimed to further the regime's eugenics policies.
Gross-Rosen concentration camp[edit | edit source]
In 1943, Entress was transferred to Gross-Rosen concentration camp, where he continued his medical experiments and executions. Gross-Rosen was known for its harsh conditions and high mortality rate among prisoners. Entress's activities contributed significantly to the suffering and deaths of many inmates.
Post-war trial and execution[edit | edit source]
After the end of World War II, Entress was captured by Allied forces. He was tried by a British military tribunal for his war crimes, including his involvement in the Holocaust and the murder of concentration camp prisoners. Entress was found guilty and sentenced to death.
On 28 May 1947, Friedrich Entress was executed by hanging. His trial and execution were part of the broader efforts to bring Nazi war criminals to justice.
Legacy[edit | edit source]
Friedrich Entress is remembered as one of the many Nazi physicians who violated medical ethics and committed atrocities during the Holocaust. His actions serve as a stark reminder of the potential for abuse in the medical profession when it is co-opted by a totalitarian regime.
