Friends Hospital is a psychiatric hospital located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States. It was founded in 1813 and is the nation's oldest private psychiatric hospital. The hospital was established by members of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers), who were motivated by a concern for the humane treatment of people with mental illness. The establishment of Friends Hospital marked a significant departure from the prevailing approach to mental health care at the time, which often involved confinement in prisons and almshouses under deplorable conditions.

History[edit | edit source]

The idea for Friends Hospital began with the concern of Philadelphia Quakers for the proper care and treatment of individuals with mental illness. In 1813, the Philadelphia Yearly Meeting of the Society of Friends authorized the creation of a facility that would provide humane treatment and care. The hospital was originally named "The Asylum for Persons Deprived of the Use of Their Reason," a title that reflects the Quaker belief in the inner light of reason present in every individual, regardless of their mental state.

Over the years, Friends Hospital has been at the forefront of developing and implementing therapeutic practices aimed at improving the well-being of its patients. The hospital's approach has always been characterized by a commitment to compassionate care, a principle deeply rooted in Quaker values.
