Frost Amphitheater
Frost Amphitheater is an outdoor performance venue located on the Stanford University campus in Stanford, California. The amphitheater is named after Laurence Frost, a Stanford alumnus and benefactor. It has been a significant cultural and social hub for the university and the surrounding community since its opening in 1937.
History[edit | edit source]
Frost Amphitheater was designed by landscape architect Thomas Church and opened in 1937. The venue was a gift from Laurence Frost, a member of the Stanford class of 1905, and his wife, Helen. The amphitheater was constructed to provide a space for large gatherings, performances, and university events.
Design and Features[edit | edit source]
The amphitheater is known for its natural bowl shape, which provides excellent acoustics and sightlines. It has a seating capacity of approximately 6,900, with a combination of lawn seating and fixed seats. The stage is set against a backdrop of trees, enhancing the natural beauty of the venue.
Events[edit | edit source]
Frost Amphitheater has hosted a wide range of events, including concerts, commencement ceremonies, and theatrical performances. Notable performers who have graced the stage include The Grateful Dead, Bob Dylan, and Joan Baez. The venue is also used for university events such as commencement ceremonies and reunion homecomings.
Renovations[edit | edit source]
In 2019, Frost Amphitheater underwent significant renovations to modernize the facility while preserving its historic character. The updates included improved seating, enhanced accessibility, and upgraded sound and lighting systems. The renovation project was part of Stanford's broader initiative to enhance its arts district.
Location and Accessibility[edit | edit source]
Frost Amphitheater is located near the Stanford University Arboretum and is easily accessible from various parts of the campus. The venue is also close to the Stanford University Caltrain station, providing convenient access for visitors from the surrounding areas.
