Frysk Hynder
Frysk Hynder is a renowned single malt whisky produced in the Netherlands. It is the first Frisian single malt whisky, named after the famous Friesian horse (Frysk Hynder in West Frisian), which is a symbol of the Friesland region where the whisky is produced.
History[edit | edit source]
The production of Frysk Hynder began in 2002 by the Us Heit Distillery, a small-scale distillery located in Bolsward, Friesland. The distillery, originally known for its beer brewing, ventured into whisky production with the aim of creating a unique Frisian product. The first bottles of Frysk Hynder were released in 2005, making it the first whisky to be produced in Friesland.
Production[edit | edit source]
Frysk Hynder is made from 100% organic malted barley. The process begins with the malting of the barley, which is then mashed and fermented in a process similar to beer brewing. The fermentation process lasts for about 72 hours, after which the liquid is distilled in a pot still. The whisky is then aged in oak barrels for a minimum of three years, as per the legal requirement for whisky production.
Characteristics[edit | edit source]
Frysk Hynder is known for its unique flavor profile, which is influenced by the local climate and the use of organic ingredients. The whisky has a light, fruity aroma with hints of vanilla and oak. On the palate, it is smooth and well-balanced, with notes of malt, fruit, and a subtle smokiness. The finish is long and warming, with a lingering sweetness.
Recognition[edit | edit source]
Frysk Hynder has gained recognition both locally and internationally for its quality and uniqueness. It has been featured in various whisky festivals and tastings, and has received positive reviews from whisky enthusiasts and experts.
