Funnies Inc.
Funnies Inc. was an early comic book packager that supplied comic book content to publishers in the late 1930s and early 1940s. Founded by Lloyd Jacquet in 1939, Funnies Inc. played a significant role in the Golden Age of Comic Books.
History[edit | edit source]
Funnies Inc. was established in 1939 by Lloyd Jacquet, a former editor at Centaur Publications. The company was one of the first comic book "packagers", which were studios that created comic book stories and art for publishers who did not have their own staff of writers and artists.
The company is best known for producing the first comic book featuring the character Sub-Mariner, created by Bill Everett, which appeared in Marvel Comics #1, published by Timely Publications, the predecessor of Marvel Comics.
Notable Works[edit | edit source]
Funnies Inc. was instrumental in the creation of several key characters and stories during the Golden Age of Comic Books. Some of their notable contributions include:
- Marvel Comics #1, which featured the first appearance of the Sub-Mariner and the Human Torch.
- Daring Mystery Comics and Mystic Comics, which introduced various superhero characters.
Legacy[edit | edit source]
Although Funnies Inc. was short-lived, ceasing operations in 1942, its impact on the comic book industry was significant. The company's model of providing complete comic book stories to publishers helped shape the industry during its formative years.
