Gaafar Ibnauf Children’s Emergency Hospital, also known as Gaafar Ibnauf Children's Emergency Hospital (GICH) or the Dr. Gaafar Ibnauf Specialized Hospital, is a children's hospital located in Khartoum, Sudan. It is the largest children's hospital in Sudan and offers a wide range of pediatric subspecialties including respiratory medicine, neurology, gastroenterology, cardiology, nephrology, infectious disease, pediatric intensive care, and neonatal intensive care. It was one of the first dedicated children's hospitals in Africa.

History[edit | edit source]

The Gaafar Ibnauf Hospital project was initiated in 1977 under the supervision of Professor Gaafar Ibnauf Suliman and the Sudanese Ministry of Health, with assistance from UNICEF. The hospital was originally established as the Children's Emergency Hospital (CEH) and later expanded to include 16 wards, a pharmacy, radiology department, nutritional rehabilitation and vaccination units, administration, records and statistics units. In 2002, it was officially renamed the Dr. Gaafar Ibnauf Specialized Hospital in a ceremony attended by the head of state, Omar al-Bashir. While the hospital previously had an emergency department, it now operates as a tertiary hospital and only accepts patients through referrals.

Research and Global Health[edit | edit source]

Gaafar Ibnauf Children’s Emergency Hospital has contributed to research in various areas, including malaria and hepatology. The hospital plays a significant role in advancing pediatric healthcare in Sudan and has collaborations with the University of Khartoum.
