Gabriel Zucman
Gabriel Zucman (born 30 October 1986) is a French economist known for his research on tax havens and corporate tax avoidance. He serves as an Associate Professor of Economics at the University of California, Berkeley. Zucman's work has significantly contributed to the understanding of the global financial system's opaque aspects, particularly in how wealth is hidden in offshore accounts to evade taxation.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
Gabriel Zucman was born in Paris, France. He pursued his higher education in economics at the École normale supérieure in Paris, where he obtained his Master's degree. He then moved to the United States for his doctoral studies, earning a Ph.D. in Economics from the Paris School of Economics under the supervision of Thomas Piketty, another prominent French economist known for his work on wealth and income inequality.
Career[edit | edit source]
Zucman began his academic career by focusing on the implications of economic policies on wealth distribution, particularly in the context of globalization. His doctoral thesis laid the groundwork for his later research on tax havens and the evasion of taxes by individuals and corporations. After completing his Ph.D., Zucman joined the faculty at the University of California, Berkeley, where he has continued to explore and expand upon these themes.
One of Zucman's most notable contributions to economics is his analysis of the scale and impact of tax havens. He has developed innovative methods to estimate the wealth stored in offshore accounts and the resulting tax revenue losses for countries around the world. His research has shown that a significant portion of global wealth is hidden in tax havens, leading to substantial losses in tax revenues for governments and exacerbating income and wealth inequality.
Publications[edit | edit source]
Gabriel Zucman has authored and co-authored several influential books and articles on the subject of tax havens and tax evasion. One of his most well-known works is "The Hidden Wealth of Nations: The Scourge of Tax Havens," published in 2015. In this book, Zucman offers a detailed analysis of how tax havens operate and their effects on global inequality and public finances. He also proposes measures that could be taken to combat the use of tax havens and restore fairness to the global tax system.
Impact and Recognition[edit | edit source]
Zucman's research has had a significant impact on both academic circles and public policy debates. His work has been cited by policymakers and international organizations seeking to address the challenges posed by tax havens and corporate tax avoidance. He has also contributed to public discourse on these issues through op-eds and interviews in major media outlets.
In recognition of his contributions to economics, Zucman has received several awards and honors. His innovative approach to studying tax havens and the clarity with which he communicates complex issues have made him a respected figure in the field of economics.
