Gamma-Amino-beta-hydroxybutyric acid

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Gamma-Amino-beta-hydroxybutyric acid (GABOB), also known as beta-hydroxy-GABA, is a naturally occurring neurotransmitter and a metabolite of the inhibitory neurotransmitter gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA).

Etymology[edit | edit source]

The name "Gamma-Amino-beta-hydroxybutyric acid" is derived from its chemical structure, which includes a gamma amino group and a beta hydroxy group attached to a butyric acid backbone.

Chemistry[edit | edit source]

GABOB is a gamma-amino acid that is a close structural analogue of GABA. It is a derivative of butyric acid with an amino group at the gamma position and a hydroxy group at the beta position.

Pharmacology[edit | edit source]

GABOB acts as an agonist at both the GABA_A and GABA_B receptors, and may exert a mild inhibitory effect on the central nervous system. It has been used in the treatment of epilepsy and for its anxiolytic effects.

Medical Uses[edit | edit source]

GABOB has been used in the treatment of epilepsy due to its ability to enhance GABAergic activity, which can help to control seizures. It has also been used for its anxiolytic effects, as it can help to reduce anxiety by enhancing the inhibitory effects of GABA in the brain.
