Gamze Bulut (born 3 August 1992) is a Turkish middle-distance runner who specializes in the 1500 meters. Bulut gained international attention after winning a silver medal at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. However, her career has been marred by controversy related to doping allegations.

Career[edit | edit source]

Gamze Bulut began her athletic career in her hometown of Eskişehir, Turkey. She quickly rose through the ranks in junior competitions, showing promise in the 1500 meters event. Her breakthrough came during the 2012 Summer Olympics, where she competed in the 1500 meters. Bulut finished second, claiming the silver medal behind her compatriot Aslı Çakır Alptekin, who was later disqualified for doping, initially promoting Bulut to gold medal status. However, Bulut's own career faced scrutiny when anomalies were detected in her biological passport.

Doping Allegations[edit | edit source]

In March 2016, it was reported that Bulut was under investigation for doping violations. The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) noted irregularities in her biological passport, which monitors selected biological variables over time that indirectly reveal the effects of doping. As a result, Bulut faced a potential ban from competition.

Impact and Legacy[edit | edit source]

The allegations against Bulut have cast a shadow over her achievements and have contributed to ongoing discussions about the integrity of competitive sports, particularly in Turkey where several other athletes have faced similar accusations. Her case highlights the challenges and complexities of combating doping in athletics.
