Garfagnina Bianca
Garfagnina Bianca is a breed of domestic pig native to the Tuscan region of Italy. It is named after the Garfagnana area in Tuscany, where it is primarily raised. The breed is known for its distinctive white coat, hence the term 'Bianca', which translates to 'white' in English.
History[edit | edit source]
The Garfagnina Bianca breed has a long history in the Tuscan region, with records of its existence dating back to the 19th century. It was traditionally raised in a free-range system, feeding on natural resources found in the forests and meadows of the Garfagnana area. However, the breed faced a decline in numbers during the 20th century due to the increasing popularity of more commercially viable breeds. Efforts have been made in recent years to revive the breed and preserve its unique characteristics.
Characteristics[edit | edit source]
Garfagnina Bianca pigs are medium-sized, with a robust and well-muscled body. They have a long head, a straight profile, and large, drooping ears. The breed's most distinctive feature is its white coat, which can range from pure white to cream in color. The pigs are known for their hardiness and adaptability to the hilly terrain and variable climate of the Garfagnana region.
Breeding and Use[edit | edit source]
The Garfagnina Bianca breed is primarily raised for meat production. The meat is highly prized for its quality and flavor, and is used in the production of various traditional Tuscan charcuterie products, including Prosciutto, Salami, and Pancetta. The breed is also valued for its ability to thrive on a diet of natural forage, making it a sustainable choice for small-scale, organic farming systems.
Conservation Status[edit | edit source]
The Garfagnina Bianca is currently listed as a vulnerable breed by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. Conservation efforts are being led by various organizations, including the Associazione Italiana Allevatori, which maintains a herd book for the breed.
