Gary Hall Jr. is a retired American swimmer who competed in the Olympic Games and is known for his achievements in freestyle swimming. He was born on September 26, 1974, in Cincinnati, Ohio, and is the son of Gary Hall Sr., who was also an Olympic swimmer.

Early Life[edit | edit source]

Gary Hall Jr. grew up in a family with a strong swimming background. His father, Gary Hall Sr., competed in the 1968, 1972, and 1976 Olympics, and his uncle, Charles Keating III, was also an Olympic swimmer. Hall Jr. began swimming at a young age and quickly showed promise in the sport.

Olympic Games[edit | edit source]

Gary Hall Jr. made his Olympic debut at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, where he won two gold medals in the 4x100 meter freestyle relay and the 4x100 meter medley relay. He also earned two silver medals in the 50 meter freestyle and the 100 meter freestyle.

At the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Hall Jr. won a gold medal in the 50 meter freestyle and a bronze medal in the 4x100 meter freestyle relay. He famously tied with fellow American swimmer Anthony Ervin for the gold medal in the 50 meter freestyle.

In the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Hall Jr. once again won the gold medal in the 50 meter freestyle, becoming the oldest male swimmer to win an Olympic gold medal in a non-relay event at the age of 29.

World Championships[edit | edit source]

Gary Hall Jr. also competed in the World Aquatics Championships, where he won several medals, including gold in the 4x100 meter freestyle relay in 1998.

Retirement[edit | edit source]

After the 2004 Olympics, Hall Jr. retired from competitive swimming. He has since been involved in various activities, including advocacy for diabetes awareness, as he was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in 1999.

Gary Hall Jr. is married and has children. He has been active in promoting awareness and education about diabetes, leveraging his own experience as an athlete with the condition.

Gary Hall Jr. is remembered for his charismatic personality and his contributions to American swimming. His rivalry with Australian swimmer Ian Thorpe and his showmanship, including his famous "boxing robe" entrance, made him a popular figure in the sport.
