In 1889, Woodruff was approached by Asa Candler, who had recently acquired the formula for Coca-Cola. Candler convinced Woodruff to invest in the company and join its board of directors. Woodruff saw the potential of the beverage and became a key figure in the early success of Coca-Cola.
