Gerald McEntee (born January 11, 1935) is a prominent American labor leader who served as the president of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) from 1981 to 2012. Under his leadership, AFSCME grew to become one of the largest and most influential labor unions in the United States.

Gerald McEntee was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He attended La Salle University, where he earned a degree in political science. His early exposure to labor issues came from his father, who was a member of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters.

McEntee began his career in the labor movement as a staff representative for AFSCME in 1958. He quickly rose through the ranks, demonstrating a strong commitment to workers' rights and effective organizing skills.

Presidency of AFSCME[edit | edit source]

In 1981, McEntee was elected president of AFSCME, succeeding Jerry Wurf. During his tenure, he focused on expanding the union's membership and political influence. Under his leadership, AFSCME played a crucial role in advocating for public sector workers and influencing public policy.

McEntee was known for his strategic use of political action committees (PACs) and his ability to mobilize union members for political campaigns. He was a staunch supporter of the Democratic Party and worked closely with political leaders to advance labor-friendly legislation.

Gerald McEntee retired from his position as president of AFSCME in 2012. He was succeeded by Lee Saunders, who had served as the union's secretary-treasurer.
