Glengoyne distillery
Glengoyne Distillery[edit | edit source]
Glengoyne Distillery is a renowned whisky distillery located in Dumgoyne, near Killearn, in the Stirling council area of Scotland. It is known for producing high-quality single malt Scotch whisky.
History[edit | edit source]
The distillery was established in 1833 and has a rich history spanning over 180 years. Originally named Burnfoot Distillery, it was later renamed Glenguin Distillery before finally becoming Glengoyne Distillery in 1905. Throughout its history, Glengoyne has remained true to its traditional methods of whisky production, making it one of the few distilleries in Scotland to still use direct-fired copper pot stills.
Production Process[edit | edit source]
Glengoyne Distillery takes pride in its slow and deliberate production process, which contributes to the unique character of its whiskies. The distillery uses locally sourced barley and spring water from the nearby Glengoyne Burn. The barley is malted on-site and then mashed to extract the sugars. The resulting liquid, known as wort, is fermented using specially selected yeast strains.
The fermentation process takes place in wooden washbacks, which are made from Oregon pine. This traditional method allows for a longer fermentation period, resulting in a more complex flavor profile. After fermentation, the liquid is distilled twice in copper pot stills, which are heated directly by open flames.
Whisky Range[edit | edit source]
Glengoyne Distillery offers a wide range of whiskies, each with its own distinct characteristics. Some of their notable expressions include:
- Glengoyne 10 Year Old: A light and fruity whisky with notes of green apples and toffee.
- Glengoyne 18 Year Old: A rich and complex whisky with flavors of dried fruits, nuts, and spices.
- Glengoyne 21 Year Old: A well-aged whisky with a smooth and velvety texture, featuring flavors of dark chocolate, orange peel, and oak.
Visitor Experience[edit | edit source]
Glengoyne Distillery welcomes visitors from around the world to experience its whisky-making process firsthand. The distillery offers guided tours, allowing visitors to explore the production facilities, learn about the history and craftsmanship behind Glengoyne whiskies, and enjoy tastings of their various expressions.
