The Glengyle Distillery is a whisky distillery located in Campbeltown, Scotland. It is owned by Mitchell's Glengyle Ltd. and has been in operation since its founding in 1872 by William Mitchell.
History[edit | edit source]
The Glengyle Distillery was originally established in 1872 by William Mitchell, who had previously worked at the nearby Springbank Distillery. However, due to financial difficulties, the distillery was forced to close its doors in 1925.
In 2000, after decades of being dormant, the distillery was purchased by Mitchell's Glengyle Ltd., a company formed by Hedley Wright, the owner of Springbank Distillery. With the goal of reviving the distillery, extensive renovations were undertaken, and in 2004, production of whisky resumed at Glengyle Distillery.
Production[edit | edit source]
Glengyle Distillery produces single malt Scotch whisky using traditional methods. The distillery has its own floor maltings, where barley is malted on-site. The malted barley is then mashed and fermented before being distilled in copper pot stills.
The distillery has a capacity to produce around 750,000 liters of alcohol per year. The whisky is aged in a combination of ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks, giving it a unique flavor profile.
Products[edit | edit source]
The flagship product of Glengyle Distillery is Kilkerran Single Malt Scotch Whisky. It is available in various expressions, including a core range and limited edition releases. The whisky is known for its complexity, with flavors of fruit, spice, and a hint of peat smoke.
