Glenlossie distillery

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Glenlossie Distillery is a whisky distillery located near Elgin, in the Speyside region of Scotland. Founded in 1876 by John Duff and two partners, Glenlossie is known for producing a characteristic Speyside whisky, which is primarily used in blended whiskys but also available as a single malt.

History[edit | edit source]

The distillery was established in 1876 by John Duff, along with H.M.S. Mackay and Alexander Grigor Allan. Over the years, Glenlossie has undergone several upgrades and expansions. In 1896, a significant event in the distillery's history occurred when it was largely rebuilt following a fire. The distillery changed hands several times throughout the 20th century, eventually becoming part of the Diageo portfolio, one of the largest producers of spirits in the world.

Production[edit | edit source]

Glenlossie's production process is traditional, utilizing copper pot stills for distillation. The distillery has a capacity of around 2 million litres per annum, making it a mid-sized producer by Scottish standards. The water used in the production comes from the Bardon Burn, which is known for its purity and contributes to the whisky's character.

The distillery operates with six stills, three wash stills, and three spirit stills. The fermentation process is relatively long, which, along with the specific shape of the stills, contributes to the light, floral character of the whisky. Glenlossie's whisky is primarily aged in oak barrels, which further enhances its flavor profile.

Products[edit | edit source]

While a significant portion of Glenlossie's production is destined for blended whiskies, the distillery also releases single malt expressions. These are typically aged for a minimum of 10 years and are known for their light, floral, and slightly fruity character. The distillery's single malts are appreciated for their balance and subtlety, making them a favorite among enthusiasts of Speyside whiskies.

Visitor Information[edit | edit source]

As of the last update, Glenlossie Distillery does not offer tours to the public, making it one of the less accessible distilleries for whisky tourism in the Speyside region. However, its products can be found in specialist whisky shops and are available for purchase online.
