Glenturret Distillery

Glenturret Distillery is a Scottish whisky distillery located in Crieff, Perthshire. It is one of the oldest distilleries in Scotland, with a history dating back to 1775. The distillery is known for producing single malt Scotch whisky and is part of the Edrington Group.

History[edit | edit source]

The origins of Glenturret Distillery can be traced back to 1775, making it one of the oldest distilleries in Scotland. The distillery was originally known as "Hosh" and was later renamed Glenturret in the early 19th century. Throughout its history, the distillery has undergone several ownership changes and periods of closure. In 1957, it was acquired by James Fairlie, who revitalized the distillery and resumed production.

Production Process[edit | edit source]

Glenturret Distillery uses traditional methods to produce its single malt Scotch whisky. The production process includes malting, mashing, fermentation, distillation, and maturation. The distillery sources its water from the nearby Loch Turret, which is essential for the whisky-making process.

Malting[edit | edit source]

The malting process involves soaking barley in water to allow it to germinate. The germinated barley is then dried in a kiln to stop the germination process.

Mashing[edit | edit source]

The dried malt is ground into grist and mixed with hot water in a mash tun. This process extracts the fermentable sugars from the malt.

Fermentation[edit | edit source]

The sugary liquid, known as wort, is transferred to fermentation vessels called washbacks. Yeast is added to the wort, and fermentation takes place, converting the sugars into alcohol.

Distillation[edit | edit source]

The fermented liquid, now called wash, is distilled twice in copper pot stills. The first distillation takes place in the wash still, and the second distillation occurs in the spirit still. The resulting spirit is then collected and stored in oak casks for maturation.

Maturation[edit | edit source]

The spirit is aged in oak casks for a minimum of three years, although many Glenturret whiskies are aged for much longer. The maturation process allows the whisky to develop its unique flavors and characteristics.

Visitor Experience[edit | edit source]

Glenturret Distillery offers guided tours for visitors, providing an insight into the whisky-making process and the history of the distillery. The tours include a visit to the production areas, a tasting session, and the opportunity to purchase exclusive bottlings from the distillery shop.
