Glenury Distillery was a whisky distillery located in Stonehaven, Scotland. Founded in 1825 by Captain Robert Barclay, it was one of the many distilleries established during the early 19th century in Scotland.
History[edit | edit source]
The distillery was established by Captain Robert Barclay, a noted athlete and politician, who was also the Laird of Ury. Glenury was one of the few distilleries to be granted a royal warrant, allowing it to use the prefix "Royal" in its name, becoming "Royal Glenury".
In its early years, Glenury faced several challenges, including a devastating fire shortly after its opening. Despite these setbacks, the distillery managed to thrive and expand its operations.
Production[edit | edit source]
Glenury produced single malt whisky using traditional methods. The distillery sourced its water from the nearby Cowie Water, which contributed to the unique character of its whisky.
Closure[edit | edit source]
The distillery ceased operations in 1985, a victim of the downturn in the whisky industry during that period. The site was eventually sold, and the buildings were repurposed for residential use.
Legacy[edit | edit source]
Although Glenury Distillery is no longer operational, its whiskies are still highly sought after by collectors and connoisseurs. Bottles of Glenury single malt are considered rare and valuable.
