God's House Hospital

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

God's House Hospital is a historical medical institution located in Southampton, England. It was founded in the late 12th century and served as a refuge for the poor, sick, and homeless. The hospital was also known as God's House Tower, a name derived from its prominent tower structure.

History[edit | edit source]

The hospital was founded by Gervase le Riche, a wealthy merchant of Southampton, in 1196. It was initially established as a refuge for the poor and sick, and later expanded to accommodate the homeless. The hospital was managed by a master, who was appointed by the founder and his heirs.

In the 14th century, the hospital was granted permission to build a tower, which became known as God's House Tower. The tower served as a defensive structure for the town and also housed the town's gunner.

The hospital continued to operate until the 19th century, when it was converted into a museum. Today, it is known as the Southampton Maritime Museum.

Structure[edit | edit source]

The hospital complex included a chapel, dormitory, and infirmary. The chapel was dedicated to St. Julian, the patron saint of travelers. The dormitory housed the poor and homeless, while the infirmary was used to treat the sick.

The tower, which was added in the 14th century, is a prominent feature of the hospital. It is a four-story structure with a crenelated parapet. The tower was used for defense and also housed the town's gunner.

Legacy[edit | edit source]

Today, the hospital is remembered as an important part of Southampton's history. The tower is a popular tourist attraction and the site of the Southampton Maritime Museum.
